Shasta Taiko - Russel Baba & Jeanne Mercer

Russel Baba and Jeanne Mercer are respected pioneers in American taiko, known for creating a new refreshing approach. Innovative and original, they continue to inspire and lead taiko into the future with Shasta Taiko and ShastaYama.

Portland Taiko

Established in 1994, Portland Taiko has developed its own unique, contemporary style of taiko that weaves rhythm, melody, humor, and movement together into an exhilarating musical experience, exploring new areas for taiko music with its innovative and provocative compositions.

Stanford Taiko

Stanford Taiko is a creative young taiko ensemble leading a growing national collegiate taiko movement. Stanford Taiko has toured Japan, China, Thailand, and Hawaii and has an outstanding reputation in the American taiko community.

Masato Baba

Masato Baba is at the forefront of a new American taiko generation. He is the son of Russel Baba and Jeanne Mercer and an original Shasta Taiko member.

Masato is a creative taiko artist based in Los Angeles with the dynamic groups On Ensemble and TaikoProject. Higlight performances include Carnegie Hall and the Academy Awards. Masato Baba’s talent and artistry are a large part of ShastaYama’s inspiration, appeal, and success.

Michelle Fujii

Michelle Fujii, Artistic Director of Portland Taiko, is known and admired for her creative fusion of taiko and dance.

Toru Watanabe

Toru Watanabe is a renowned Japanese folk dance artist and choreographer, and a member of Portland Taiko.

Lawson Inada - Oregon Poet Laureate

Writer Lawson Fusao Inada honors include an Oregon Book Award, an American Book Award, fellowships from the NEA, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry. He has served as Steinbeck Chair of its National Center, and as Poet Laureate of Oregon.

Kris Bergstrom

Taiko has become a vehicle of creativity for Kris Bergstrom’s many talents. He has gained a reputation in taiko with ON Ensemble and TaikoProject. Kris brings a fresh and unique spirit to taiko and ShastaYama.
